HMPV Cases in India: Latest Report

India has reported 11 cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) so far. Cases have been identified in Bengaluru (2), Gujarat (1), Chennai (2), Kolkata (3), Nagpur (2), and Mumbai (1).

New Case in Mumbai

A six-month-old infant tested positive for HMPV at Hiranandani Hospital, Powai, bringing the total cases in Maharashtra to three. This respiratory virus can lead to serious health issues, especially in infants, elderly people, and those with pre-existing conditions.

Expert Insights on HMPV

Former AIIMS Director Dr. Randeep Guleria explained that HMPV is not new. While it usually causes mild symptoms, severe cases in vulnerable individuals can lead to pneumonia and hospitalization. He recommended symptomatic treatment, staying hydrated, eating nutritious food, and avoiding crowded places to minimize the risk.

Government Response

Union Health Minister JP Nadda reassured the public, stating that HMPV is being monitored closely and there is no cause for alarm. Similarly, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak assured that the government is taking proactive measures. The Patna administration has also urged residents to stay calm and follow official guidelines.

Precautionary Measures

Health experts note that while there is no specific vaccine for HMPV, maintaining general immunity through regular flu shots or COVID-19 vaccinations may offer some protection.
